UTOPIA - 11.01.2022
November 1, 2022
Good Tuesday morning.
Welcome to RUPP'S NOTES/FBI SPECIAL AGENT HARTMANN SERIES post for November 1, 2022. I'm novelist Richard V. Rupp, writing from Burbank, California.
Can you believe it's November 1st, and the holiday season is starting? The end of the year is almost upon us. I trust you had a fun and safe Halloween. Mine was quiet. In fact, much of it was spent writing this newsletter.
What's happened thus far this year has convinced me that the plot for my upcoming book, SKYWARD is right on target. Sorry about that. If you look around the world, there is a lot of depression. One person indicating depression is Chinese President Xi Jinping, who said, "dangerous storms are ahead." You don't want a guy with the power he has making a statement like that. China and Russia are moving back toward the darkest day of totalitarianism while the concept of democracy is in turmoil.
Like most, if not all of you, my confidence in the direction of society has been deeply shaken this year. There is no logical answer to why Putin started the war in Ukraine. It's an ego trip for him that has moved from the concept of winning battles to just plain destruction and criminal violence. Unfortunately, that concept now exists on our streets. We have gone through a pandemic that has triggered increased violent crime and uncontrolled inflation. Now, the beating of Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has taken things over the top.
While all the above "manmade" problems are happening, our Earth is falling apart. I just read an article about a "managed retreat" strategy slowly gaining traction with those who govern. It is designed to relocate communities out of the vulnerable areas created by climate change. Yes, people, the livable world is shrinking, while at the same time, the human population is expanding. It doesn't take an algorithm to figure out this is a major problem that could result in extinction.
Now I just need to stop seeking more ideas for SKYWARD and get my existing plethora of notes converted to dialog and narrative. My characters are telling me it's time. And I suspect many of you are saying the same thing.
SKYWARD is the story of what's happening today here on Earth that leads a group of STEM-educated Millennials and Gen Z's to want to develop their own society in the infinite frontier of space. It's the story of going from a DYSTOPIA – a place of lawlessness and political disorder to a UTOPIA – a place of ideal perfection.
Since humans created the concept of "society," they have always sought a Utopia. It seems to me for such a concept to survive requires the seeking of a new frontier or space. Humans were not designed to be crowded together. There was empty space (void of humans) here on Earth for a long time. That no longer exists.
Humans are the only creatures thus far designed to adventure into the new frontier of space. Space is the human "safety valve."
While trying to solve problems here on Earth is admirable, it is of little value if we do not expand humankind to the new frontier – SKYWARD.
Cheers,
