MORE ON CRIME SCENE PICS
In my last Rupp's Notes, titled Pics, I discussed crime scene photography. I noted that even though this forensic tool was available to him, Sherlock Holmes did not use it. To my surprise, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle admired Parisian police officer Alphonse Bertillon who devised the concept of crime scene photography. I learn this in an article by Stephanie Gorton titled "The Intimacy of Crime Scene Photos in Belle Epoque Paris, in Atlas Obscura.
We know this because in "The Hound of the Baskervilles, Doyle has one of Holmes' clients call him the "second highest expert in Europe." To which Holmes indignantly asks, "Who's first?" Doyle's answer, ". . . the precisely scientific mine . . . of Monsieur Bertillion."
Ms. Gorton's article is quite interesting and expands greatly on the use of crime scene photography. Here is the link to it - https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/alphonse-bertillon-crime-scene-photos?utm_source
